“The essence is formed only by fire.”
Episode 39 of Vefa Sultan opens with a lesson about fire and purification, and the rest of the hour builds on that idea. Zembilli Ali stands before the sheik and is told he will enter seclusion. Elif struggles with a marriage her father is arranging. A group of angry men loses the goods they took from Vefa and turns on each other. Salman is sent home to finish something he has left undone. This guide covers the main scenes without spoiling the ending.
Zembilli Ali Is Sent Into Seclusion
Zembilli Ali comes before the sheik and is asked who he is. He answers that he was the teacher Zembilli Ali until he crossed the threshold, and that he now seeks reunion with the soul rather than with a loved one. The sheik tells him he will enter seclusion, though Ali wonders whether it is too early for a novice dervish. Salman is asked to prepare the lover’s attire. The sheik explains that seclusion refines the soul, teaches self-observation and empties the heart of everything except Allah. Ali’s remembrance is “There is no god but Allah.”
Elif, Belinay and a Marriage Without Love
Elif tells Belinay Hatun that she does not want to marry someone she does not love. Her father insisted that the suitors come, and she cannot speak to him or to her mother about what her heart already holds. Belinay advises patience, no despair and no abandoning prayer, and says the task is to win her parents’ approval. Elif replies that her father never goes back on his word. Later Suleyman Effendi scolds the workers over the untidy garden, reminds them the suitors are coming and orders the wedding trousseau to be made ready. Elsewhere, it is noted that Zembilli must convince him.

Lost Goods, Angry Men and a Cradle
The men who took goods from Vefa learn that their carriage overturned on the road and everything was destroyed. Their agha blames them, and they blame him in return, listing the money gambled away and their expulsion from the corps. The argument grows so heated that one man begs the others not to become murderers. At the lodge, Huseyin practices sewing a dervish robe and hears that its meaning matters more than its look.
