“Happiness at home begins with a kind smile.”
Episode 42 of Vefa Sultan is a quiet hour built around a wedding. The Sheikh teaches a dervish what marriage asks of a husband. Suleyman Effendi agrees to give his daughter Elif to Ali, and the lodge prepares a ceremony for the very next day. Elsewhere, Huseyin and Zulfikar face each other again, and a visiting scholar judges a man he saw begging in the street. The warm mood does not last the whole episode, and the final scene leaves a worry hanging.
The Sheikh’s Lessons on Love and Marriage
The episode opens with Grandfather Sheikh leaving young Ahmed at a tree grown from the seed of the Tree of Life. The Sheikh then questions a dervish who has finished his seclusion. The dervish answers that man is a slave to what he wants. The Sheikh speaks of love, respect and affection as the base of a home, and asks if heart and mind agree. Later he lists a husband’s duties: please her heart, provide for the household, never touch money under her control, and protect her in this life and the hereafter.
Elif and Ali’s Wedding Comes Together
Elif learns that her father has accepted her marriage to the teacher, and he admits he realized his mistake. Belinay Hatun, Halime Hatun and Leyla prepare the bride’s bundle, perfume, slippers and flowers. When the Sheikh’s party asks for Elif’s hand on behalf of Ali, Suleyman Effendi worries that a wedding normally takes a month to prepare. The Sheikh says it will be tomorrow, simple and without extravagance or borrowing. The marriage is then declared with a mahr of one hundred gold dirhams, and the guests offer congratulations.
