Episode 18 opens on a rooftop at night, where Hudayi’s Sheikh answers a question about patience and the traveler’s path. Then the crescent appears and Ramadan begins at the lodge. Mahmud Effendi and Seyyid Muhammed carry supplies to poor households in person, and Hatice Hanim finds something at the iftar table. But a quiet remark from the Sheikh about grapes sends Mahmud out into the winter cold, and what he finds there is where the episode leaves you.
A Question About Patience on the Roof
Late at night on a roof, one man asks why they are there so late and is told to be patient and not to sleep. Soon after, the Sheikh speaks with Hudayi about Maddetu’l-Hayat by Aksemseddin and about what the traveler needs. Hudayi says he can no longer bear suffering and fears he will not find peace in the countryside. The Sheikh answers that the traveler endures with patience and gratitude, that every bitterness is a remedy, and that he should not say he has given up. Then the cry goes up that the crescent has appeared.
Ramadan Arrives at the Lodge
Ramadan is announced through the streets and the dervishes wake for the first suhoor. The Sheikh reminds everyone to read the Quran, to be a remedy for the wretched, and that one of the two dates on the table belongs to the poor and needy. A cautionary notice from the Sublime State follows: fast if healthy, pray the obligatory namaz at the mosques, keep to the set prices, or be punished. Meanwhile the dervishes notice that Mansur Effendi has not been seen, and his saddlebag is gone from his room.

Mahmud insists that giving is incomplete without meeting the poor in person, and Hatice Hanim agrees to follow his lead. At Sakir Dede’s house he asks for more flour and beef liver, and later Hatice Hanim says she has missed meals where she is full without eating. After the Sheikh mentions wishing for grapes, Mahmud sets off with his donkey in the middle of winter. A Qadi offers him a horse, a stranger points him to vineyards on a snowy hillside, and the iftar hour draws closer.
