In Episode 16, Bayram Efendi starts a new kind of work on the Great Mosque in Bursa. Atabek becomes his Ustad, and the labour leaves him little time for prayer or rest. Numan Efendi, the Kapucubasi, searches for stone and for a site, but one elderly woman refuses to sell her home. Somuncu Baba watches over his disciple and sets a strict test for his tongue. A New Ustad and a Heavy Load
Somuncu Baba tells Bayram that Atabek will be his Ustad from now on. The work begins right away. Bayram mixes mortar, loads rubble stone onto a cart and is scolded whenever he slows down. Numan Efendi and the builders go over the plans: twenty domes, a site of five and a half acres, and two minarets. Vasilis Ustad is asked to supply his best rubble stone. Bayram quietly worries that all this labour keeps him from dhikr and contemplation, and the strain starts to show.
The Old Woman Who Would Not Sell
Every household on the mosque site has sold except one. An old woman says her ancestor took part in the taking of Bursa and that she has lived in the house for seventy years. She threatens Numan and Bayram when they ask. The Qadi also refuses to bend the Sharia, and Numan is left with nothing to report to the Sultan. Somuncu Baba then goes to her himself. He speaks gently and suggests a way that leaves her without losing her home and the people without losing their mosque.

Bayram’s friction with Atabek comes to a head over a wall and a prayer. Somuncu Baba steps in and reminds everyone that a disciple serves the public and protects living beings. Bayram then asks to look for other work, but his Sheikh answers that this duty was chosen for him. From now on only words of dhikr and kindness may leave his mouth. Meanwhile Numan Khoja comforts the young Musa with the story of Mus’ab ibn Umair. Time passes, and the episode closes on a turning point for Bayram.
