In Vefa Sultan Episode 5, Mustafa spends his early days at the lodge tannery in Bursa, where the smell is hard to bear and the work is harder. Mustafa Among the Skins
Mustafa starts work with the dervishes, who tell him he will get used to the smell. He is not convinced and says it is not possible. The others describe leather crafting as a difficult craft where the skin has a specific time, so nothing can be rushed. The mood turns when the lodge skins are found damaged. Mustafa asks whether he was not simply told to do it, but he is accused of not listening and not admitting his mistake. Some skins are ruined, and he is told he will be held accountable.
The Sheik, the Perfume Shop and the Old Man
The Sheik tells one of his dervishes to skip the cleaning for the day and fetch good scents from the perfume shop for the lodge. An old man then tells a tale of a sultan whose growing country brought a bad smell from his throne. No perfume sellers, torn-up throne or demolished palace could remove it. The old man ties the story to arrogance, and the two argue sharply. Elsewhere, the Sheik answers Karamani’s worries with the story of the rabbit and the turtle, and later Karamani carries a message to Mustafa.

A quieter story follows Belinay and a friend whose wedding is only a few weeks away. The friend is troubled about the dowry. She and her mother saved what they could, but it is not enough. Belinay offers to talk to her father, yet the friend refuses to burden her and says she has always solved her own problems. She adds that her fiance Sahin is kind and generous, but he only listens to his mother. Another scene shows a father searching for someone who lost himself and warning his daughter not to wither in the hands of someone who does not appreciate her.
