“Let the faithfulness of the faithful be seen.”
Episode 55 of Vefa Sultan opens with a lesson on the nafs and then turns to a real crisis. Sheikh al-Islam Molla Gurani announces that forbidden books were found in the Sheikh’s store, the store is sealed, and officers begin searching the lodge. Every dervish must decide whether to stay or leave. Fear spreads through the lodge while Hursid, Huseyin, Salman and others weigh loyalty against safety. Here is a recap of what happens.
A Lesson on the Nafs and a Game of Chess
The episode begins with Vefa Sultan teaching that the path of love has no final victory. He says that anyone who claims to have killed the nafs is mistaken, because as soon as one desire ends, another begins. He gives his dervishes two locks to hang around their necks as a reminder. In another scene, a chess game becomes a lesson that the essence of the game is the king, and that the surrounding pieces are used to trap it. Nazir asks whether Vefa’s dervishes were used that way, and the game ends in checkmate.
Molla Gurani Seals the Store
Molla Gurani tells the dervishes that the Sublime State depends on justice. He says forbidden books were found in the Sheikh’s store, that the store is sealed, and that officers will inspect the lodge. Each dervish will be questioned individually. Those who wish may leave unharmed, and those who stay share the outcome. One dervish is threatened in private and told to choose between his life and his Sheikh. Officers also question the Sheikh’s helper, who says he has repented. Fear takes hold of the lodge.
