Episode 5 of Imam Ghazali opens with a blank sheet of paper and a broken pen, and the lesson drawn from them shapes everything that follows. Ghazali is told that stillness comes before knowledge and is sent to settle at the madrasa. Meanwhile Ahmad learns of their father’s death, the brothers lose their blind mother in the streets, and a Qadi begins questioning a man named Salih over a caravan raid.
The Blank Page and the Broken Pen
Ghazali explains that the question stood before him like an empty sheet. He weighed everything he had read, yet could not write any of it down, because assuming you know is a man’s most intimate lie to himself. The elder answers that choosing stillness comes before knowledge, and that a heart which seems full may only be hearing its own echo. When he hears that the pen broke before the word, he calls it a sign of divine mercy. He then tells Ghazali to collect his belongings from the inn and settle into his room at the madrasa.
Sheikh Nessac and the Empty Pit
Ahmad tells his brother how his search led him to the lodge of Sheikh Nessac Efendi, a man who seemed to speak with the earth. The sheikh had him dig a hole in the courtyard, like a grave, and Ahmad was so absorbed that even his mother slipped his mind. The sheikh teaches that everything performs dhikr and that one should carry burdens and forgive, like the earth. Later, beside the empty pit, he speaks of someone who must fall before getting back up.

Note: Your TV and your phone, tablet, laptop or a PC need to be on the same network. A Lost Mother and a Qadi’s Questions
The brothers learn that their father has returned to Allah’s mercy, and then realize Ahmad left their blind mother waiting by the road. They search the streets, asking everyone about a woman with olive pit prayer beads, until Mother Kevser brings her back safely. The episode then moves to the Qadi’s hall, where Salih is pressed about a caravan raid. Two witnesses from Tus give conflicting accounts, Salih stays silent, and the Qadi asks the men from Tus whether they know him.
