Episode 6 of Imam Ghazali opens in the Qadi’s court. Ghazali and his brother Ahmad are asked to testify under oath about their brother Salih, who is accused of colluding with bandits. Ghazali will not speak of what he has not seen, and the choice weighs on the family. In Nishapur his teacher asks him to lead a lesson, but a feverish dream and a search for rare roses leave him doubting everything he knows. Watch the episode here with English subtitles.
Two Brothers Testify About Salih
The Qadi asks whether the brothers know Salih, then whether they know he colludes with bandits. Ahmad speaks of an orphan who grew up at the same table and never harmed anyone. Ghazali answers more carefully. He loves Salih dearly, but he cannot testify to what he has not seen, and only Allah knows all things. Afterwards Ahmad confronts him, worried about their mother. Ghazali replies that he cannot bear false witness, and admits his heart and his mind pull in different directions. They agree to keep the matter from their mother until the verdict.
A Request, a Closed Door and a Dream
Al-Juwayni tells Ghazali that Ahmad’s testimony came from the heart and his own from the mind. He asks Ghazali to teach the madrasa students the next morning, because Ghazali studied the etiquette of knowledge in Tus. Ghazali is surprised and recalls that his treatises were lost in the fire. Meanwhile Ahmad is turned away at the lodge because Sheikh Efendi is said to be unavailable, then sees another visitor admitted. That night Ghazali wakes with a fever, shaken by a dream built around the words Nothing, Salih and You.

Note: Your TV and your phone, tablet, laptop or a PC need to be on the same network. When Knowledge Falls Silent
Ghazali sets out with Saliha despite his fever, saying that if he stops to rest he will forget his destination. Along the way he asks for Muhammadan roses, but a healer has bought them all, and a seller points to the foothills of a mountain. In front of the children he puts the books aside and asks what knowledge begins with. A student asks whether it begins in the heart or in the word, and Ghazali cannot answer. He walks out, confessing that he carried only silence. A grieving woman then tells of a raid, and the final minutes turn back to Salih.
