Episode 1 of Imam Ghazali opens with a scholar addressing his students, admitting that words and interpretations have not brought him to the truth. A vision then carries the story to Nishapur and Tus, where a woman waits at the city gate for a mujaddid, and a family faces illness and rivalry. A Teacher Who Loses His Path
The episode begins with Imam Ghazali speaking to his students. He names Tafsir, Fiqh and Kalam, and the scholars whose interpretations people keep circling, including his own teacher al-Juwayni. He says words have become a veil over meaning. His students insist he is the one who can open the doors of truth, but he answers that he has no comprehension left and no path. He says he will no longer be a transmitter of words but a seeker of the truth itself. He then asks Allah to unite him with His light, and his students cry out and call for a physician.
Seyyide Khatun Waits for a Mujaddid
After the title card, Seyyide Khatun speaks of a young man from her dream. She tells her teacher that a mujaddid is coming to Nishapur, someone with a heart thirsty for the truth and a mind full of questions. She recalls her late father, the Seyyid, who promised that such a person would come. Later she waits at the city gate and speaks with the Esteemed Scholar. Crowds are arriving for a great debate, as young men hope to enter the Nizamiyya Madrasa. She says her heart told her to stand at this gate.

Note: Your TV and your phone, tablet, laptop or a PC need to be on the same network. In Tus, Muhammad is ill and his wife Zainab is losing her sight. Ghazali and his brother Ahmad climb the mountains to find healing herbs, and Ahmad wishes they could attend the debate in Nishapur. Ghazali tells him that duty comes before dreams. When Ahmad slips, Ghazali holds on to him. Back home, a quarrel breaks out with Salih, who resents Ghazali’s shadow and says his path is not theirs. Juwayni and Nizam al-Mulk also discuss the debate, and the episode closes with a night of dhikr that turns troubling.
