“Worldly knowledge that distances us from Allah has no place on our doorstep”
In Vefa Sultan Episode 4, Mustafa and Molla Celaleddin finally reach the lodge, but the road does not end at the door. The madman’s riddles, a fig tree that divides the dervishes, and the Sheik’s demand for surrender test everyone who has come to learn. Mustafa gives up his fine clothes, takes on humble chores and waits for a mission that suits him. This episode with English subtitles is a quiet, thoughtful chapter about pride, patience and what a seeker must leave behind.
Riddles on the Road and a Fig Tree at the Lodge
The madman leads Mustafa and Celaleddin toward the lodge and asks them riddles on the way. When he asks where souls go after leaving the body, he answers that they go wherever the oil lamps go when the light goes out. At the lodge, the fig tree he planted causes an argument. One brother says its roots are wild and may split the foundation, while Celaleddin pleads for it. In the end the tree is not killed. It is cut back and carried away to find the right soil.
The Sheik Tests Mustafa’s Patience
Zinnur Effendi visits the Sheik, and Mustafa watches the lodge at work. The Sheik tells him that the madman is the first to test everyone who comes to the door. Mustafa is told that he has not been accepted yet and must show surrender first. He is ordered to give away his clothes and wear the dervish cloak, then is given the job of keeping the lodge clean. Karaman and the other disciples are kind, but Celaleddin keeps a watchful eye on every move Mustafa makes.

A Search for Ink and the Mission Given at Last
Mustafa hears that the Sheik wants a disciple to write down his words, so he goes to the market to buy an inkwell. He runs into old rivals from Sultaniye School, who mock him for leaving his teaching post. Back at the lodge, the Sheik explains where ink comes from and says each person should receive work that fits their ability. He asks Mustafa to wait until morning, but Mustafa insists on a task right away. The Sheik then gathers all the disciples and speaks about worldly knowledge, comparing it to a fig tree.
