Episode 23 of Haci Bayram i Veli opens with the Sultan accepting the Chief warder’s request to leave his post, then turns to Bayram’s spiritual path. After a sudden collapse, Bayram tells his Sheikh about a vivid vision and learns that he has left the Reproaching Soul behind. The episode then moves through his work as a shepherd, small lessons about mercy and honesty at home, and a Magus who comes with three questions. The Sheikh Marks a Turning Point
After Bayram recovers, he describes his vision to the Sheikh: vineyards and gardens, a stream like crystal, a red horse with golden wings, and the Sheikh himself sitting under a tree saying Huu. The Sheikh tells him that he has left the Reproaching Soul behind and won his war with his nafs. He also warns that Satan’s traps can look like they come from the truth. Bayram is told to keep his dhikr, to say it alone and in his heart among people, and not to sink into the world.
Mercy for a Goat and a Hungry Dog
Bayram is given five animals to prove the praise he has heard about his pasture. Later, when children hurt a goat while playing, he tells them how the Prophet protected a dog and her puppies on the way to Mecca. He explains that animals are silent servants of the Almighty and that mercy is owed to all creatures. His own habits match his words: he accepts bread from the baker Harun as a debt, and he gives his leftovers to a dog because it was hungry and he was not.

A Magus also questions Bayram and then recites the shahada. Meanwhile the Sheikh speaks to his dervishes about unity after his departure, and Bayram tells him that he keeps hearing a child crying. The Sheikh tells him to walk toward the sound.
