Episode 11 of Haci Bayram i Veli opens with a wedding and ends on the road. Numan Efendi, the Head Professor, is promised Ayse Hatun, the daughter of Mevlut Bey, and the marriage contract is read at the Konak. Yet the madrasa feels hollow to him, and Somuncu Baba answers his complaint with a short parable about a walnut. What follows is a farewell to Enguru and a journey to Solfasol, where Numan hopes to be initiated.
A Proposal and a Wedding
Numan tells Somuncu Baba that his brother has come from Solfasol and that they will ask for Ayse Hatun’s hand. Mevlut Bey had invited them, and he accepts the proposal, entrusting his daughter, the crown on his head, to Numan. A herald announces the wedding at the Konak of Mevlut Bey for the 3rd of Jumada al-awwal. At the ceremony the mahr is set at thirty dirhems in gold and five sheep, both sides say I do, and the guests close with prayers for love, endurance and a lasting union.
Numan’s Doubts About the Madrasa
The lessons on al-Ghazali’s Al-Mungidh min al-dalal continue, but at home Numan tells Ayse that the madrasa has become joyless and that he cannot find peace there. She says she supports whatever his heart says. Somuncu Baba answers his complaint with a line about a walnut: a man who only bites the shell knows nothing of the meat inside. Numan then asks his Ustadh to let him resign as Head Professor, saying he is still unrefined.

Somuncu Baba’s party loads its belongings, and Abdal Murad says goodbye in his own way. Numan and Ayse entrust each other to Allah, and Numan travels to Solfasol. There he asks Sheikh Ali for initiation but is told that patience, love and surrender come first. After a month of waiting, Numan asks when his time will come.
