“If one cannot see with the eyes of the heart, then one cannot see with the eyes on one’s head either.”
In Episode 13, Numan Efendi asks the Sultan for his dismissal as Kapucubasi and sets out to find his Murshid. Ayse Hatun does not agree with his decision, and he has to say goodbye to his children. On the road he travels with Sucauddin Efendi, who insists on being in charge of the journey. Scenes from Bursa also show his meetings with Mullah Fenari and Emir Buhari. Here is a summary of what happens.
The Dismissal and the Farewell
Numan Efendi tells the Sultan that he wishes to be dismissed. The Sultan says he had known about this wish for quite a while, and he grants it, adding that he is pleased with the service. Later, Ayse Hatun asks why Numan cannot be a dervish without quitting his job, and she says she does not consent to dragging the children into the unknown. Numan replies that they seek consent from Al-Haqq only. He entrusts his family to Allah and tells Ahmet to look after his mother, brother and sister.
Mullah Fenari and Emir Buhari in Bursa
A man at the Palace tells Numan Efendi he was sent for regarding a teaching appointment, so Numan goes to Mullah Fenari. Mullah Fenari explains that Numan was actually invited to fill the position of Kapucubasi, and that Stefan, the brother-in-law of the Sultan, was playing a prank on him. Numan still says he would love to give lessons. Later he meets Emir Buhari, the son of Sayyid Ali from Bukhara, who says he witnessed Numan’s debate with the Vassal Manuel in Enguru.

The Road with Sucauddin Efendi
Numan sets out with Sucauddin Efendi, who makes him promise to follow whatever direction he points. Along the way a story of Hasan al-Basri and the well is told, and the travelers give water and food to men who say robbers took everything they had. At night there is a warning about thieves, and later one of them runs from wolves and hears that the wolf eats the outer form while the Nafs eats the inner self.
