Episode 18 follows Haci Bayram through a hard stretch of spiritual training and daily work. After a vivid dream during his seclusion, Somuncu Baba explains the struggle with the inciting self and points him to a path of Dhikr. Meanwhile, in 1396 Bursa, the Great Mosque site loses its workers, the man in charge is told he is failing, and a poisoned drink puts many men in danger. Bayram’s patience is tested at the butcher’s shop and at home before the episode closes on a quiet conversation about his future.
A Dream and the Inciting Self
Bayram tells Somuncu Baba about a dream in which the weather is freezing and he worries about Ayse and the children, only to find firewood waiting in the courtyard. The Sheikh explains that this belongs to the Chillah and that An-Nafs al-Ammarah, the inciting self, tries to deceive a disciple. Seclusion, he says, is about overcoming the ego and earning Allah’s approval, and the Dhikr of La ilaha illallah is the remedy. Later Bayram describes another dream, and the Sheikh names al-Jalal as his Vird and speaks of the second stage, Nafs al-Luwwamah.
Trouble at the Great Mosque Site
In Bursa, the workers have stopped coming to the Great Mosque construction after the earlier incident. Numan Efendi has a town-crier call for experienced stonemasons, while Somuncu Baba tells him the work cannot be managed with coins alone. When Sultan Bayezid’s inspection is announced for two weeks later, the men are pushed to work twice as hard. Then a sherbet vendor serves the workers and many fall ill. A young boy, Sabuncuoglu Serefeddin, brings a potion that heals them, and Baba urges an end to the divide between Muslims and non-Muslims on the site.

Bayram’s trials continue away from the mosque. At the butcher’s shop, an Efendi criticizes how Lutfi cleans the tripe, and a story of the Prophet and Uqba bin Abi Mu’ait is told about answering insult with patience. Bayram then travels with the Sheikh, sees Dilaver’s two-sided field, and helps repair a dry fountain. Ayse tells him she cannot agree to dragging the children into the unknown, and Bayram admits that his real fear is falling behind in his Dhikr. The final scene leaves his path open.
